Purpose vs. Passion

Ever fall victim to any of these headlines?

Find your passion!

Live your passion!

Passion is the secret ingredient to all happiness!

If you have, you're not alone. Hundreds of self-help books and gurus use the promise of passion to answer their clients' burning questions of how to find true happiness and fulfillment in their lives.

Do I believe in passion and its influence on happiness?

Yes, but...

Passion isn't just something you find. It's falsely packaged as a thing you can pick up on aisle 7. This is why people are made to feel so foolish for not having a passion. Passion is created.

How?

Purpose is the underpinning of passion. Research and experience has shown us that the happiest people are those that feel they are fulfilling their purpose in life. And they've found you can do this in several ways!

Watch this week's video to learn how to align with your PURPOSE in order to create PASSION in your life!

That's garbage!

You've read the books, and you've attended the seminars.

You know what it takes to stay relevant in the business world today. And that's to create content.

Yet, when it comes time to set down and write that tweet, or outline that newsletter, you freeze. Your mind goes blank, feel you have nothing important to say, and so you do nothing.

There are plenty of ways we justify this in our minds:

"I'm too busy for social media."
"The right people already know about our company and what we do."
"I don't have anything worth saying."

None of these are true. And frankly, none of these really matter.

Several writers and great content-pushers of our day have been interviewed saying, "Luckily, inspiration strikes me every morning at 9am." .... Which is exactly the time they sit down to create everyday!

That is NOT a coincidence. They make a HABIT out of it. They commit to it, and they follow through.

Seth Godin - a renown marketing guru and author - has a famous blog. And how often do you think he writes for that blog?

Seth writes 5 articles EACH DAY! And only publishes 1 of them. Seth is willing to create garbage.

That's right, a best-selling author and master creator creates garbage. He simply is not afraid of it. And neither should you.

We all have fears that pop up when we consider creating something and sharing it with the world. But if those fears are STOPPING you from creating altogether, then I'm giving you permission to create garbage!

Watch this week's video for more fun on creating garbage along the way:

Will you be Brave?

will-you-be-brave.jpg

I'm curious... Have you ever gone to someone for advice or feedback and felt they were just telling you what you wanted to hear? Or feel like they weren't even really listening to you at all and just agreeing for the sake of it?

Even our closest, most-trusted "go-to" people can give us sugar-coated feedback. But hey, they don't want to hurt our feelings! So cut them some slack, right?

In graduate school, I had a professor/mentor give me the most honest (and boderline confrontational) advice I had ever heard. I was complaining about someone and she basically said, "have you thought about how your actions impact the situation."

I was stunned and offended at first. I thought 'you're supposed to be on my side!' The immature child in me wanted to run for the hills and never return because of shame and embarrasment. This was my professor after all!

But what I did was sit there and actually think about what she said. She clearly saw something that I could not see. She said to me what no one else had yet cared enough to say. And the encounter changed my life and the way I relate to others.

Why am I telling you all this?

Because I want to give you the same gift. I want to have those tough conversations with you. I want to push you to be better. And sometimes it will hurt.

So this week I want to challenge you to be brave. When you come in to see me next, talk about the issue you've been neglecting to mention...the thing that's really nagging you. Ask for the feedback you know you need to make real change in your life. Be courageous enough to receive the feedback.

Or, if you've never come in before, take that leap to face the feedback you know you need to hear! Be brave!

{WATCH the video for my promise to you!}

Vlog: Do Less to Get More

vlog-do-less-to-get-more.jpg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jngXio4uriI No, that's not a typo! When you do less, you can get more of the things you really want in your life! Sometimes you have to get back down to your foundation in order to build a skyscraper.

Hear my examples in this vlog - and share yours below in the comments!

Ever "follow your dreams" in some way and find yourself overloaded with stuff you didn't think you'd be doing? Tell us why, and how you changed this!

You have 2 Options!

photo-11.jpg

When we are plagued by indecision, overwhelm, or a bad attitude we have 2 options:

Change your Mind or Change the Environment.

The former is the more difficult of the two - but definitely feasible! The latter can also feel like a struggle, but is a real game-changer! Which will you choose?

Change your Mind: Situations, behaviors, and interactions are most often benign. But we are conditioned to attached a thought and then an emotion to the event. See diagram. The resulting thoughts and emotions impact your future behaviors and reactions.

Image

You have the power to change this! Once your become more aware of your cognitive and emotional reactions to a situation, you can choose to attach a different meaning to it - a meaning that better serves you!

Change your Environment: It takes a lot of awareness, practice, and emotional control to exercise a cognitive change, like I just described above. Sometimes in the moment it's best just to move! Ever heard of fight or flight? Well, your situation may not be that serious, but you could still benefit from "fleeing" the situation and changing your environment. Pissed at your boss? Go outside for a walk. Take your lunch break outside of the office. Or go visit a colleague's cubicle.

Image

Take advantage of this great New England weather and increase your Vitamin D with a little sunshine! This can improve anyone's mood!

Bottom line: you have two options! Pick on that serves you and run with it! Tell us below which option works best for you? When have you tried using this before? Share comments to spread the love!

Seminar Countdown!

screen-shot-2014-04-25-at-12-36-12-pm.jpg

With only 7 days until the start of the Build Your Best Self seminar, I wanted to do a 12-days of Christmas-isque countdown. See 6 and 7 below:

Day 7

There are 7 days in a week. Each day provides us with a new opportunity to focus our intention, find clarity in action, and pursue our greatest desires. What did you do in your last 7 days? Come join us to find your focus!

6 Days until the Build Your Best Self seminar:

Experts say we are all connected by 6 degrees of separation. But even with the people we already know, doesn't it feel like we're separated by even more? It can be really difficult to open up to the ones we love and speak our truth. We have fears of rejection, seeming needy, and feeling vulnerable. In order to Build Your Best Self, you need to rally the support of those in your life. You need to learn to communicate effectively, ask for what you need, and speak from the heart. Have trouble doing that? See you May 1st then.

Find out more information about the seminar on my vlog and email me at brittany.drozd@gmail.com!

Check out this hilarious, straight forward, and real-life blog! I don't often recommend other blogs. But when I do, trust me, they're good!

More specifically, check out his article "16 ways I blew my marriage". We can ALL benefit from acknowledging the behaviors he calls attention to, and recommended "do over" approaches.

Happiness is a State of Mind

screen-shot-2014-02-17-at-12-21-51-pm1.jpg

I don't get outside often enough in the winter. But when I do, I'm very grateful for the experience. During winter, I hear people complaining all the time about the weather, the snow, how terrible it is to live in a cold climate, etc. Yes, I'm guilty of some of these statements too. But you know what? They are just excuses! Excuses not to be happy. Excuses not to enjoy our day. Excuses not to appreciate the beauty of winter and snow. Excuses not to take responsibility for the choice we made to live where we do.

No, I don't expect you to wake up everyday feeling full of gratitude for every single thing in your life. But this is what I expect of you:

Take responsibility for your own happiness.

Choose to appreciate versus disregard the beauty in your life.

Recognize your life's abundance.

Here's how I met my own expectations today! How did you meet yours? Leave a comment below!

Serious About Change: Dr. McKaila Allcorn

image.jpeg

Meet Dr. McKaila Allcorn. She is just like the rest of us in that she’s a daughter, wife, and has a demanding job. But she’s different from us in a few ways too. McKaila had the discipline and commitment to significantly change her body, and as a result, improve her life!

So, what was the last straw McKaila?

“I had trained for 3 months to run a half marathon with some friends. I had been running several times per week and pushed myself during the race, only to find that I had lost 1 pound throughout the whole process! I know there had to be a better way to lose weight and get healthy.”

Like many of us, McKaila wanted better for herself and needed to change her ways. She had been busy in medical school and her residency at Kent Hospital, and let her health become less of a priority. But continuing on this path was a not an option for her if she was going to live the life she wanted and help care for others who are sick as an ER doctor.

So what did you do?

“I am from Oklahoma and had a friend back home that had talked with me about this product called Juice Plus+. So I did my research and found that I was going to have to significantly change my diet if I was going get healthy and lose weight.” Juice Plus+ provides whole food nutrition in a capsule so you can get the fruits and vegetables your body needs to run most effectively. It’s then next best thing to actual fruits and vegetables for a busy lifestyle.

McKaila says she loves this product because they provide nutrition plans and education. This knowledge can empower sustainable change for people’s diets. Additionally, the nutrition plan encourages you to try several different diets, such as gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, etc. That way, you can see what your body responds to, and cater your meal planning from there.  All diets aren’t right for everyone, so find the plan that works for you and get after it!

But it wasn’t just supplements that changed McKaila’s body. Not even close! Real foods and preparation are requirements! McKaila said she would cook several meals on Sundays and package them up so she’d be ready for work, snacks, and any other time that would tempt her away from her goals.

McKaila said she notice a big energy boost after making these changes – along with better skin, and friends who had reported getting off medications because of the positive effect real foods had on them.

So as long as I eat right I’ll have these results?

Wrong again! McKaila said she was also in search for something that would nourish her physically, mentally, and spiritually. Yoga. Several times a week, no excuses. Rain or shine. “If you’re going to make a real lifestyle change, you have to be consistent. It can’t just be when you feel like it.” McKaila is currently training to become a yoga teacher and share with others the positive experience she’s had with yoga and it’s supportive community at Laughing Elephant yoga in East Greenwich.

Any tips for the rest of us?

“Find your motivation. Mine was my long-term health. I used positive self-talk to get through those tough days.” Time management is very important too. Make sure to make a date with healthy cooking and the gym that you won’t flake out on!

Doctor McKaila mentions that obesity is a risk factor for so many diseases and conditions that are life threatening. So don’t be a victim - get healthy, get active and regain control of your life!

Core Desired Feelings: feel the way you want to feel!

Image
Image

As the Holidays come and go, we're left with the aftermath of harried shopping sprees, over eating, and gatherings with those we love and loathe.  So what now?

It seems that everyone's already talking about New Year's resolutions and I still can't even see straight after the holiday madness! So before you starting trying to formulate how 2014 is going to be "different", I ask you to consider this:

Did you get what you really wanted this holiday season?

No, I don't mean that new video game or tech toy. I mean life wise - do you feel truly fulfilled in your life? When you wake up, do you look forward to your day? Or dread all that you have to do today? Do you love those you are surrounded by? Or do you want a do-over?

Wish that were different? Want to better/fulfilled/desired? Make it happen!

Danielle Laporte does an awesome job of outlining how to get from here to your feeling your best ever! Follow these tips to jumpstart living your core desired feelings now:

- Make word slopof how you want to feel: Take a blank piece of paper and write down your ideal feelings. These should be optimistic, positive, and loving feelings. Go nuts!

- Narrow it down to 3-5 core desired feelings. You will need the focus in order to move forward with this.

- Ask yourself What does ______ feel like? Write down your answers for each core desired feeling. This should give you clarity!

- Activate the feelings! Write down 3 things you can do today/this week/this month to generate [enter core desired feeling here].

- Do it now! What are you waiting for? Take back the control of your life to stop the spinning, feelings of overwhelm, and numbness that all too often stop you for being your best self!

For more details check out Danielle's worksheet for identifying, implementing, and activating those feelings now! Work with me for strategic, detailed, and disciplined approach to making this ideal your reality!

Listening Advice from Larry King

larry_king_1a1.jpg

“Nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So if I’m going to learn, I must do it by listening.” – Larry King, internationally known television and radio show host

It's not often that I get the chance to quote Larry King. So when I do, I take it!

One of the best things we can do to connect to others, learn about someone, and get smarter is to listen! I know, sounds strange right?

But think about this: How often to do you interrupt when someone else is talking? Think about what you're going to say when the other person finishes? Check your email when you're supposed to be listening? Are you supposed to be listening to someone right now while reading this?!!

Clean up your listening act now to be more present, charismatic, and genuine in your interactions with others:

- Stop multi-tasking! If you care about what the person is saying, then you owe it to them. If you don't care, then why are you talking to them?

- When you find your mind wandering, pull it back in by making eye contact with the person. Or if on the phone, close your eyes to focus on their voice.

- Pause before responding. This will make you appear more thoughtful, composed, and present in your conversations!

Manage Your Stress Better!

stress-management.gif

Who isn't stressed? Right?! Especially around the Holidays!

Does your day look something like this? Drop off the kids, go to work, pick up the kids, go Christmas shopping, mail cards to family, cook dinner, get family pictures taken.....Aahhhhh!!!

So how do you stop the madness? Ideally, we'd all cope with stress successfully by using the techniques we know will ground us and make us calm. But for some reason, I can never remember what those are in the moment. Anyone else have this problem?

Our body's response to extreme stress or a threatening situation is fight, flight, or freeze. Fighting with your boss, kids, or partner is probably not the best way to get what you need. Freezing will help you think momentarily about what your next move should be.

But I want to talk to you about flight- When we're in a stressful situation either we've got to change, or the environment has to change. When a situation is too stressful, it's difficult to change our behaviors or habits. So when you're first working on coping skills to better manage stress, change your environment!

- Walk away from the immediate stressor

- Take space in another room or office and turn off the lights.

- Take a walk outside for 10 minutes to slow down your thoughts.

The more practice you have in stressful situations, the more you will understand the control you have in them. Once you've regained some of that control, implementing stress management techniques will feel more like a positive choice your making, rather than further adding to your stress. Some techniques to try when your stress in on overload:

- Think of this: "Is my head in the same place as my feet are?" Be present!

- Fold in half with knees bent and do the waterfall.

- 3-Second Breaths: deep breath in (inhale over 3 seconds) and exhale (for 3 seconds). Repeat 10 times.

These grounding techniques will help you slow down, collect your thoughts, and strategize for success in whatever your stressful situation is.

What is Harvard saying about nutrition?

harvard.png

In the midst of the Holiday season, what are you doing to try to avoid an eating overload and sugar comas? We know you can't say no to mom's home cooking and Aunt Susie would be totally offended if you didn't try her pound cake! So how do you deal? Make a schedule. Find out when all those holiday gatherings are and write them down. Then make all non-party days the time to recover, restore, and reset for nutrition's sake!

Don't just take my word for it. Harvard Medical School's vast scientific and social research has produced the following tips to make your holiday meals a success - without adding extra pounds to work off after New Years!

- Change your perspective! Good eating is not a punishment, but an opportunity. If you know why it's important and what to do, you'll find it enjoyable and satisfying.

- Change slowly. By the time you are 40, you'll have eaten some 40,000 meals — and lots of snacks besides. Give yourself time to change, targeting one item a week.

- Snack on unsalted nuts, trail mix, fruit, raw veggies, Rye Krisp, or graham crackers. Try eating a few handfuls of a crunchy fiber cereal such as Kashi, or nibble on a cereal bar.

- Experiment with new recipes and meal plans. Be creative and take chances. Instead of dreading your new diet, have fun with it.

- Take a long-range view. Don't get down on yourself if you slip up or "cheat" from time to time.

What Success Really Looks Like

success.jpeg

I hear this all the time: "I tried to change but it's not working." "I keep trying but nothing is changing." Etcetera, etcetera. Look people, if whatever it is took years to 'break' then it's not going to be completely fixed overnight!

Most people have a linear picture of what success looks like in their heads. And that makes sense for the most part - If someone is successful, they mostly likely have small achievements on a daily basis.

But I like to reality-check that idea with this saying: "an overnight success is really an everyday hustler." Meaning....this person didn't become successful in a snap! They've worked years to get where they are!

One of my favorite examples of this is GoPro cameras. You see these awesome sports cameras everywhere in 2013! But what most people don't know is that the founder first got this idea in 2000! He has been working his butt off for 2013 years to make this a household item! 13 years!!! What have you worked on relentlessly for 13 years? Yeah, I know... me neither.

The point of this is not to make us all feel bad and lazy, but to recognize that each time we keep trying, each effort we make to reach our goals, is still putting on the path for success. We learn from every experience we have, whether we think it came out great or poorly. We gain strength from each time we get back on the horse and give it another go.

Success can largely be attributed to a frame a mind. As said by Tony Robbins:

“People who fail focus on what they will have to go through; people who succeed focus on what it will feel like at the end.”

So when you've been knock off track and feel like you will never achieve change or success, quit focusing on the small steps and get back in touch with your big picture.

What does your goal look like? What will it feel like when you get there? Share your goals below in the comment section now!

What is a leader?

nelson-mandela.jpg

Today with the passing of a great leader, we reflect on a life of hardship, achievement, and respect that took a lifetime to earn. In today's world where people expect instant gratification and entitlement, leaders like Nelson Mandela are becoming more scarce. Even from his humble beginnings, Mandela challenged the status quo and himself to be better. Mandela thought outside of the box, had original ideas, and refused to accept no for an answer. Through great strife and oppression, Mandela's movement of ending apartheid gained momentum and he was able to build a more racially-integrated South Africa and positively impact people all over the world.

So what do you think defines a leader? What sets someone apart? What qualities are found in all great leaders?

Before you comment below, I'll leave you with some of Mandela's most inspirational guidance:

"It always seems impossible until it's done."

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."

R.I.P. Nelson Mandela

So Thankful!

1378486_10151745490986226_1367959646_n.jpg

In the midst of the holiday season we're traveling, cooking, shopping, and being busy bees! With so much going on, it can be so easy to lose sight of the real celebration- our abundance. We have so much to be thankful for, but we hardly have the time to sit down and think about all that we have in our lives. So my Thanksgiving starts now with a list of what I'm thankful for:

- My job: allowing me to share my gift with others and helping them become their best self!

- My family: for always being supportive and loving in whatever I wanted to do!

- My health: feeling good and strengthening my body with good food and fitness

- My husband: my always being my partner in crime and supporting my dreams

- My abundance: I have so much in my life, more than I need. And I'm thankful for that. But I also understand that's why I need to give back. I make every effort to bring my best self to the table everyday for those I work with, serve, and love. I deserve it, and you deserve it for me!

So what are you thankful for this year? What kinds of abundance do you have in your life?

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Make Change Stick!

change_bulldozer.jpg

Happy Monday! I know a lot of people who look at Mondays as an opportunity for a fresh start and chance to make a change. What's something you want to change? So what do people do to make this change stick? Yes, I can eat a very healthy meal and I can exercise for 3 days in a row. But what makes for lasting change? What determines the success of those are able to make stick it out?

Here are 5 ways people have made lasting lifestyle changes in their lives:

- Hit rock bottom to face change: Being forced to lose weight or exercise due to severe health consequences (i.e. diabetes).

- Take baby steps: Set a realistic change goal for your diet by eliminating one food item at a time.

- It takes a village: Get a support team in place that you can call in a time of need. Kind of like a change sponsor!

- What's in your environment: Are you trying to drink less but work at a bar? Hmmm.... Consider working somewhere different to increase the likelihood of your success. Can't change your job? Look at smaller changes that will influence your behavior.

- Take Einstein's advice: The definition of insanity is "doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." So if you've tried to make a change and it's not working, Albert says to try something else!

Let's hear it! What are doing to make a change in your life? I want to hear what's working and what hasn't for you! Comment below now!
