You are what you eat! Really!!

you-are-what-you-eat-really.jpg

I know what you're thinking..."I could really use a snack right now!" How did I know that? Because I'm human too, which means I get tired at this time during the work day and I love food!

And, similarly to you, millions of people make diet and nutrition goals and resolutions every year. Whether it's to lose ten pounds, follow a specific diet, or eat more veggies, we all need to pay attention to what we're eating!

Now, two weeks into the New Year, where do you stand with the resolutions you made just two weeks ago?

If you've already fallen off the bandwagon (we won't tell :), here's your chance to get back on.

In this week's video, I interview Shira Hirshberg of All Foods Nutrition to tell us what big food mistakes we're making and what small changes we can make that will have a major impact in our diet.

Why is this important to you?

Your nutrition and health is so central to how we feel and our ability to access our full potential. Need more focus at work? Well, what did you eat today? Feeling rather moody? What did you eat today?

See what I mean?!

So maybe you're one of those health wizards that has this all down already? Great! Make sure to share your strategies with the rest of us on the blog!

The celebration of dedication

the-celebration-of-dedication.jpg

Happy Holiday Survival Series! Week 5 is all about an alternative meaning of Hanukkah you might not be familiar with - the Feast of Dedication. This got me thinking, "what am I really dedicated to?"

If you're like me, you can list off a ton of things your dedicated to - from your partner to your pet.

But when is the last time you really made good on your dedication? I mean, really showed how dedicated you are to this person or thing?

I start getting overwhelmed during the holidays because I have to go to so many parties, events, and dinners for things I'm dedicated to!

....And then I want to do just the opposite and hide in my house by myself!

Watch this week's video to learn how to avoid the overwhelm and dedicate yourself to 1 thing at a time!

{http://youtu.be/ewk2-agiWSs}

Tells us all about the ones you're most dedicated to! Head on over to the blog or the comments section of the video to share your stories and feedback there!

Are You Really Satisfied?

are-you-really-satisfied.jpg

Are You Really Satisfied? If I asked you to rate how you feel about your life right now, how would you rate it? A solid 8 out of 10, or more like a 5 because it could really be better?

Why do I ask?

A Wall Street Journal article posed this question recently: “Are you a Satisficer of a Maximizer?” The researchers asked a series of questions to see if people were generally satisfied with what they have (job, possessions, lifestyle) or if they found themselves always searching for the next best thing.

Why is this important?

What the researchers found is that there is a significant gap in “happiness” between the Satisficers and Maximizers. And the Satisficers come out on top!

Surprised by these results? At first it may seem that they’re suggesting you lower your standards. But what the research really suggests is that you need more gratitude in your life!

Come over to the blog to watch the video for ways to get more grateful and become a Satisficer!

In the comments, I’d love to hear from you!

Have you ever felt overwhelming nagging to have something different – a car, a job? Or, if you’ve been about to get over that “next best thing” search and have a story to share, let us know!

Your Key to Happiness

your-key-to-happiness.jpg

Ever look aimlessly for your keys and they're nowhere to be found?! Yeah, this is kind of like that. Frustrating, but so rewarding when you find them!

Ever look aimlessly for your keys and they're nowhere to be found?! Yeah, this is kind of like that. Frustrating, but so rewarding when you find them!

Everyone’s always looking for the key to happiness. Trying to find it in their career, their relationships, and other external things. But happiness has to come from within.
This is good news for some and bad news for others: the good news is that if happiness comes from within, that means we’re all capable of having it. We’re all capable of being happy. The “bad” news that it comes from within, meaning that you’re going to have to look in the mirror and dig through the trenches to find it.
Sometimes it’s hidden beneath the very things we’ve been trying to avoid and ignore in our lives. Sometimes it’s smack dab in the middle of us and our relationships with others. But no matter where happiness is hiding, we need to do the following things to find it…..  [watche the video]
Wach: http://youtu.be/JHfWMvZ1ONU
  1. Draw a map. Where was your happiness the last time you saw it? Where has it been in the past? At different stages of your life?
  2. Make a to do list based on the activities you were doing when you’ve been happier in the past.
  3. Be aware! How are you acting during the day? What’s your mood like? How are you interacting with others? All of these things impact our happiness, and you will need to be aware of what you’re doing now if you’re going to change it.
  4. Give a damn! If you want to be happier, then you’re going to have to make an effort, engage, and care about YOU!
When has this worked for you? When have you been happier in your life? What's something you already know helps you feel happier? I CHALLENGE you to write one thing in the comments section that you will change TODAY to make room for more happiness!

I want to hear from YOU! Send me your questions, suggestions, and comments on what you want to see and hear from me on videos, blogs, and newsletters! I want to give you exactly what you need to be your best self!

Who's On Your List?

I usually like to keep these emails fun, upbeat, and positive. But sometimes you just have to keep it real, and today is one of those days.

On a very real note, I would like to recognize the life and recent passing of comedian and actor Robin Williams. It's important to recognize that Robin Williams had been reportedly suffering from major despression and bipolar disorder.

We hear about these disorders in the media and from friends and family. Who hasn't made a joke about someone you know being "bipolar"? But these disorders are very real, have major impact, and can afflict anyone. So please take it more seriously.

Have you, or someone you know, struggled with depression or bipolar disorder?

My guess is that you have.

What did you do? What helped you break through your deepe

st bouts of depression? What helped you turn it around to be in a happier place?

What or who was your motivation?

What was your vision for yourself? When did you decide that this current state wasn't going to be good enough?

Sometimes in life we feel that we're very alone. That no one else is truly there for us. But every one of us needs supports.

We need people on

our sides, on our team, in our black book that we can call when life is overwhelming.

Write those people's names down. Make a list o

f the people who are your best supports. Remind yourself of who really is there for you.

Give them a call today.

Let them know they're on you list of best supporters. People like knowing that they can be helpful for others.

Who's list do you think you're on? Give that peroson a call today, just to let them know you're there.

Life is hard enough. The best thing we can give to each other is our presence, our love, and our support. So please give this to someone today.

3 Ways to Better Relationships Today

3-ways-to-better-relationships-t.jpg

How many people have you already spoken to this morning? How many of those people would you consider an essesntial relationship to your life? And how many of those conversations could have gone better?

It is a basic human need to be part of a group or something bigger than ourselves. That is why we form these relationships. Although we hate to admit it, we need support from others at times as well. And in some ways, the connections we form with other people provide the greatest gifts in life!

So taking care of these relationships is essential!

Here are 3 ways you can improve the most important relationships in your life, and likely improve yourself as well:

  • Ask yourself "What's my desired outcome?" or "What do I want to happen?" to get closer to your personal motivations.
  • Be Brave! Share your true self, desires, and needs to further close the communication gap.
  • Show up for them! Be mentally present, responsive, and empathetic - you would want the same in return.

Watch the video for more information and tips on how to enact these changes today!

How I'm a Failure...And I Love It!

Screen-Shot-2014-07-14-at-5.32.50-PM.jpg

Who doesn't have days when you feel like nothing is going right, and you'll never get back on track?!

And when you share that with anyone, it's like they're all on the happy train and trying to steer you away from negativity.

But sometimes you need to wallow in your failures before you can see the flipside!

It's days like that when I call on my Failure role models for a little inspiration! Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan, and Beyonce Knowles were all failures at one point in their lives.

It's difficult to even imagine such successful people as failing at something. But they do! All the time! What they're able to do is the see the Failure Flipside!

When you're experiencing failure, the key is to envision your success in that exact scenario. Watch this week's video to learn the Failure Flipside approach to turning your devastating failures into future successes!

Listen as I share my personal failures, my failure role models, and the key to changing your failures today!

You Vs. Summer - Will you lose?

discipline1
discipline1

Picture this: You’ve worked really hard since January to work out regularly, cut out sugar and carbs, and make your needs a priority to get healthy and improve your life.

Fast forward to July: You’re at happy hour on a Tuesday drinking beer and sharing nachos with friends. You’ll end up staying out late and feeling terrible for work tomorrow. You’ll soon forget the pain and repeat the cycle on Thursday, Saturday, and so on.

What happened???!! You were doing so well with your health and goals!

Even those with the best of habits and intentions succumb to the stronghold of summer. Its long, warm nights, laughter, and relaxation… Wait, what am I saying?! You’ve worked so hard to get this healthy. Are you really going to let it all go now?

You wouldn’t be reading RI Fit Magazine if you weren’t interested in your health and wellness. Summer can sneak up on you and attack your wellness goals and all the progress you’ve made without much notice. Before you know it, you could be back where you started – at your old weight, with your poor diet, and inconsistent exercise.

Avoid this regression by making a plan for summer success! Know your obstacles and determine action steps to overcome them ahead of time.

Here are some common obstacles that you’ll encounter this summer, and ways to overcome them in order to maintain your health and wellness:

You vs. time with friends

Who wouldn’t want to see more of their friends and family this time of year, whether it’s at a BBQ, the beach, or doing something active? The key here is quality over quantity. If you say yes to everything, you will end up exhausted and overwhelmed. Ask yourself, “How does this outing serve me? Is this something that makes me happy?”

You vs. the gym

Not getting to the gym because you’re spending too much time hanging out with friends? Get a sweat buddy! Tell someone your fitness goals for the summer and make a commitment to keep each other accountable. Find a time to exercise together, because you’re more likely to keep that appointment with them.

You vs. the food

Make a list of the foods you can have all the time, for example fruits and vegetables; food you can have once daily, such a dairy or breads; and foods that you never want to be eating, like super sugary foods or bagels. Make these three lists based on your diet and goals ahead of time to in order to avoid nutrition sabotage on a weekend getaway.

You vs. the beer

Who doesn’t like a Summer Shandy when the sun is out on a Sunday afternoon? The key to this one is moderation. When we tell ourselves “no” to something, it can make us want it more. Figure out the number of drinks you want to have based on your wellness goals and set that limit before you start drinking. Always make sure you have a designated driver too!

You vs. Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important wellness indicators that everyone forgets about. If you’re not getting good sleep, then your work, relationships, and fitness will likely suffer too. Set a curfew for yourself! Determine an amount of time that you require for adequate rest – aim for at least 7 hours. Starting from the time you need to be at work the following day, count backwards to the time that you’d need to be in bed to get your adequate sleep. This is your curfew time!

Vlog: My Miracle Morning

vlog-my-miracle-morning.jpg

How did your morning start out?

Was it bright, cheery, and full of energy right when you rolled out of bed? Or was it more like snooooooozzzze as long as possible, rush to get out the door, and curse towards the sky because it's Monday again?

Yeah, the second one? I thought so!

Many personal development coaches speak about the power of a positive and intentional morning. That a few key actions right when you wake up can make the difference in your day, and eventually your life

What do you think?

So I've set out to attempt my own version of a miracle morning... Guess what I've found??! These little changes CAN make a huge difference in your day! Especially your attitude!

Find out what changes I've made and see the results in the video below!

Vlog: Self Care is Essential!

vlog-self-care-is-essential.jpg

[video type="youtube" id="0njUhhG0_PY" width="624" height="351"] Happy Monday! Are you coming off of one of those weekends?! You know- the kind where you can't believe that you got no rest and feel even more tired than on Friday?

The likely culprit...No self care!

Think about it- what did you do for yourself over the weekend? This is not sustainable to not make time for yourself! You deserve to cared for too! Whether it's a bath, reading a book, or making time for exercise, it all goes into your emotional bank account.

Learn more about the emotional bank account and my self care catalogue in the video! Share your comments and self care success stories below!

You have 2 Options!

photo-11.jpg

When we are plagued by indecision, overwhelm, or a bad attitude we have 2 options:

Change your Mind or Change the Environment.

The former is the more difficult of the two - but definitely feasible! The latter can also feel like a struggle, but is a real game-changer! Which will you choose?

Change your Mind: Situations, behaviors, and interactions are most often benign. But we are conditioned to attached a thought and then an emotion to the event. See diagram. The resulting thoughts and emotions impact your future behaviors and reactions.

Image

You have the power to change this! Once your become more aware of your cognitive and emotional reactions to a situation, you can choose to attach a different meaning to it - a meaning that better serves you!

Change your Environment: It takes a lot of awareness, practice, and emotional control to exercise a cognitive change, like I just described above. Sometimes in the moment it's best just to move! Ever heard of fight or flight? Well, your situation may not be that serious, but you could still benefit from "fleeing" the situation and changing your environment. Pissed at your boss? Go outside for a walk. Take your lunch break outside of the office. Or go visit a colleague's cubicle.

Image

Take advantage of this great New England weather and increase your Vitamin D with a little sunshine! This can improve anyone's mood!

Bottom line: you have two options! Pick on that serves you and run with it! Tell us below which option works best for you? When have you tried using this before? Share comments to spread the love!

I'm so proud to be part of this amazing group of people! When I first joined Crossfit Providence, I had the same fears everyone does - "I can't do this", "these people are intimidating", and "I will never be as good as them." But these thoughts are so self-limiting!

Making Space for Stillness

meditate.png

Meditation, presence, and quieting the mind have all been central themes in my work and personal life lately.

There seems to be this franticness that a lot of people are carrying around with them. A franticness that they need to figure out something big- like a career path or finding a partner. And the franticness serves to speed up the process because it must happen very soon or else.....

They might die. Their life will be over. They will never the thing they really want in life.

This all sounds really dire and tragic, right? But is it true or real? Will you really die if your career path doesn't look as planned? Will your life be over if you don't find a partner before age 35? Is life really not worth living if you don't have the bank account you thought you would by now?

Picture spinning a top (the toy). Imagine that with each spin, we dive further and further into our own head and thoughts about how life should be, the things we should have, and what you need in order to be happy. And with each spin, you are fed more and more marketing about what society tells you that you should want and need.

How would you get out of this situation and stop the spinning?

This place is bred from scarcity and fear. When we feel we don't have enough or are afraid, we are much more susceptible to messaging from the outside world and trust that more than ourselves. You have to disavow scarcity and fear within yourself to overcome the spinning.

How do I do that?

Before you can replace the scarcity and fear with something that actually serves you, you must first create the space for the inspiration and exploration of something new. The space will first be filled with stillness- a quieted mind, free from judgment and franticness. In the stillness you will find new ideas, feelings, and sensations coming up for you. Look, listen, and feel those things for all they can offer you.

Find the stillness through meditation, yoga, prayer, singing, dancing or any other way that serves you.

Share your practice below to inspire others :)

Be your best self today,

Brittany

The Ultimate Success Strategy

Happy Sunday!

soul-sunday.jpg

Happy Soul Sunday to all of you! It's a beautiful sunny day here in Rhode Island. But no matter where in the world you are, it's a beautiful day to reset, renew, and restore for the week ahead.

Who has started Spring Cleaning already? Me too! It's unbelievable how many material things we accumulate. I moved a year ago and had the opportunity to get rid of all the crap I didn't need. So I find it astounding that only 1 year later, here I am with the same problem.

The funny part is that when we're buying all this "stuff" we totally 100% believe that we need this item or really want that thing. But the truth is the need or want are really just masks and lies.

You will always get everything that you need. Sometimes no more than that, but always enough. How do I know that? Well, tell me a time when you didn't have all that you really needed to survive. Please, do tell me in the comments below if you've been through a time like that.

We get stuck in the mask of "I need this" or "if I only had that...I'd be happy. Or "...I'd be fulfilled." Or "...I'd be [fill in the blank with your core desired feeling]." But these are only lies we tell ourselves.

What we need to be happy will never come from the Apple store or Nordstroms. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But it's true.

We have to consciously and actively create and pursue happiness in and by way of ourselves. You have to be aware of your life aim. You have to make goals. You have to take chances and move towards your fears. You have to go outside of your comfort zone, and you have to go inside of your heart to find out what you really need.

Today I took to time to nourish my body with exercise, my my mind with organization and cleaning, and my spirit with laughter and friends. This made me so much happier than buying new shoes!

Don't believe me? Try it for yourself! Clearly your old methods of trying to obtain happiness and fulfillment aren't working. Otherwise, you wouldn't be reading this blog!

Make today and every Sunday a place to get rid of what's not serving you and make space for nourishment, restoration, and something new in your life. Create your best self in the process.

Want your life Photoshopped?

want-your-life-photoshopped.jpg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRlpIkH3b5I

So often we run around wishing things were different about our lives, and our selves. What if you could change that?

In this video, 4 women received professional makeup, styling, and photography to make them look like "Cover Girls." Every woman's dream, right? Well, their reactions may surprise you.

Not only did these women feel that they didn't recognize themselves, they had overall negative reactions to being so drastically photoshopped. They even said, "I don't even know that person."

How do you project this is your own life? Do you wish you looked like someone else? Had someone else's career? Someone's life? That would fix everything! Right?!

Wrong. Don't ask to look like someone else. Or be someone else. Be yourself. Be your best self.
